Signs and Prevention of Dehydration

Have you ever been dehydrated before? Many of us have at some time in our lives! There are many factors that come into play, and that is why we need to stay mindful of our fluid intake. While sometimes you are able to catch it early on and adjust accordingly, others can be hospitalized if you neglect your body in this way.

Symptoms of dehydration:

  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Darker colored urine
  • Dry skin
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fainting
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Heat intolerance

Dehydration Prevention:

  • Carry a water bottle with you so that you always have fluids
  • Always drink water during exercise
  • Increase water intake during warmer seasons, and elevation changes
  • Add fruit to your water to add flavor
  • Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake

Signs that you are hydrated:

  • Adequate sweat production
  • Pinch the skin, release, and color should return to normal
  • Apply pressure to nail, release, and skin under nail should return back to normal instantly
  • Light colored urine

You may have already heard the saying “if you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated.” This saying is true. Never forget to bring your water with you, and never let yourself get behind. Sometimes it is too late, and it can require an emergency visit to replenish the fluids in your body. Don’t wait until the summer to figure this out!
